Have the compensation conversation first

July 29, 2026 · 4 min read

A search that avoids compensation until the final stage is a search that has agreed to discover its own constraints as late as possible.

Naming the range early costs a few uncomfortable conversations and saves entire interview loops.

Be specific about the structure

Base, bonus, equity, currency, and the review cycle each change how a candidate reads an offer. A single number without structure invites mismatched expectations at the point where a decision is hardest to reverse.

Treat the work model as part of the package

Location expectations, travel, on-call, and in-office days are compensation. Candidates price them, so it is better to state them than to let them surface after an offer.
